We are the proud owners of Oak Hill Farm Suri Alpacas--Betty and Kirk Turner. We started our farm about eight years ago when we moved from Atlanta to a lovely rural home with an empty barn that sat on 5 unused acres, which consisted of an apple orchard and pasture land.
We wanted an easy-going animal in our pasture; something nice to watch and fun to manage. We were raised around horses, but our son was three at that time, and we needed a gentle animal that he could be around. As we kept researching, we hoped that maybe we could make some money while enriching our life with whichever animal we chose.
We considered the entire range of livestock. Then we saw the alpaca commercial on TV. We thought that we'd take a look, so we went to a large farm here in Georgia just to see the alpacas. Our son fell in love with them right away, but it took us months of research and planning until we made the decision to buy a small starter herd. But when we saw the first little one (crias) born on our farm, we began to see what raising alpacas could be.
Betty worked for the farm for a year to learn all that she could about the business of raising alpacas and the industry of fiber (fleece) processing. The farm she worked at has one of the best reputations in the country for their fiber processing. She learned much about the animals and what a profit that can be made from them. But we made many trips, performed much research, and calculated our way through all the scenarios that the future could bring. We thought long and hard about our investment before we started our alpaca adventure.
We started out with two maiden females, then decided to grow a little bigger by adding an experienced mom. Our herd springs from quality stock that we bought from one of the top-selling, prize-winning Suri Alpaca Farms at the AOBA (Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association) conference this year. We have enjoyed our herd so much! We have a business that is profitable and fun. Our "alpaca years" have been the greatest of our lives. Our Alpacas are part of the family; we know each one's personality, likes, and dislikes. Everyone wants to see, learn, and talk about the Alpacas. We have grown into a real farm, and now have the size herd for which we planned.
Raising alpacas has been a rewarding experience and would be great for any family. My husband is farm manager. He takes care of our farm from feeding to fixing up anything to making our web site and publications. Our son is our waterboy, and he checks on "his girls" every day, and talks to them. I am helping to care for them, and enjoying the herd after work. We all participate in the day-to-day care and maintenance of the Alpacas.
Our farm is small, but it is representative of 85% of the Alpaca Farms in the US. Our animals are always well cared for and behaved. This is the perfect lifestyle for us, and may be for you as well.
Please call and come over for a visit to see for yourself. Just click here, and send us a message. For more information on alpacas, go to our "Why Alpacas?" page. We would love to talk to you and show you our herd.
